GRAMMAR - DEGREES, DEFINITION AND TYPES

DEFINITION OF THE DEGREE

In English grammar, a "degree" refers to the level or intensity of an adjective or adverb.

अंग्रेजी व्याकरण में, डिग्री किसी विशेषण या क्रियाविशेषण के स्तर या तीव्रता को संदर्भित करती है।

TYPES OF THE DEGREE

When understanding the degrees of comparison is important for effectively communicating comparisons between nouns or adjectives. These degrees are:

1. POSITIVE DEGREE:

This is the simplest form of an adjective or adverb, without making any comparison. It merely describes the quality of a noun or verb without comparing it to anything else. For example:

Positive: She is tall.
Positive: He runs fast.

2. COMPARATIVE DEGREE:

This degree is used to compare two things, indicating which one has a higher degree of the quality being compared. In most cases, the comparative degree is formed by adding "-er" to the end of the adjective or adverb (for short adjectives or adverbs) or by using "more" before the adjective or adverb (for longer adjectives or adverbs). For example:

Comparative: She is taller than her sister.
Comparative: He runs faster than his friend.

3. SUPERLATIVE DEGREE: This degree is used when comparing three or more things, indicating which one has the highest degree of the quality being compared. In most cases, the superlative degree is formed by adding "-est" to the end of the adjective or adverb (for short adjectives or adverbs) or by using "most" before the adjective or adverb (for longer adjectives or adverbs). For example:

Superlative: She is the tallest girl in the class.
Superlative: He runs the fastest among all the athletes.

Conclusion:

Remember, irregular adjectives and adverbs might have different forms in the comparative and superlative degrees. Additionally, some adjectives and adverbs don't follow the typical pattern and require memorization of their comparative and superlative forms. It's important to be familiar with these forms to accurately convey comparisons in writing.
