GRAMMAR - THE NARRATION, DEFINITION AND TYPES

DEFINITION OF THE NARRATION

The narration in English grammar refers to the perspective from which a sentence or a story is told.

अंग्रेजी व्याकरण में narration (वर्णन) उस परिप्रेक्ष्य को संदर्भित करता है जिससे एक वाक्य या कहानी कही जाती है।

Narration में Direct and Indirect Speech पढ़ा जाता है, लेकिन इससे पहले हम Narration के बारे में महत्वपूर्ण बातें जान लेते हैं:

It's closely related to the concept of point of view (POV) in literature. There are three main types of narration in English:

1. FIRST PERSON NARRATION:

In first person narration, the story is told from the perspective of one of the characters using the pronouns "I," "me," "my," etc. This allows the reader to see the events of the story through the eyes of that character, providing a personal and often subjective view of events. Example: "I walked to the store and bought some groceries."

2. SECOND PERSON NARRATION:

Second person narration addresses the reader directly, using the pronoun "you." This is less common in traditional storytelling but is often used in instructional or self-help texts to engage the reader directly. Example: "You walk to the store and buy some groceries."

3. THIRD PERSON NARRATION:

In third person narration, the story is told by a narrator who is outside of the story using pronouns like "he," "she," "it," "they," etc. There are two subtypes of third person narration:

[A] Third Person Limited: In this form, the narrator only knows the thoughts and feelings of one character, usually the protagonist, and refers to that character using third-person pronouns. Example: "She walked to the store and bought some groceries, feeling tired after a long day."

[B] Third Person Omniscient: Here, the narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of all the characters and can move freely between them. This omniscient perspective allows for a broader view of the story and its characters. Example: "She walked to the store and bought some groceries. Little did she know, her friend was waiting for her just around the corner, planning a surprise party."

Understanding narration is crucial in understanding the perspective from which a story is being told and how that impacts the reader's experience and interpretation of the events described. Different narrators can provide different insights, biases, and levels of access to the story's world and characters.
